Solid Oak Ranch
We raise ADGA registered Nubian goats and make goat milk products including soap, lotion bars and chapstick. We also train and sell quality, well-broke and useful horses and ponies.
The kids had an excellent weekend at the Ohio State Fair with their dairy goats! I’m very proud of how hard they work year round raising these goats and they have some very nice does to show for it! It’s so fun to watch Cora study genetics and her herd, chatting with other breeders and making decisions to make improvements where she needs them. Breeding is challenging, having animals year round is expensive and demanding, but the rewards are extra sweet!
What an incredible thing for youth to be involved in! Life lessons are deep when kids are given the opportunity to develop their passions and take on the majority of responsibilities. Confidence soars and the achievements are rich (in and out of the ring). But, with that, come struggles and heart ache. We had to cut our time at State Fair short to get back to a sick goat who didn’t make it. It’s part of raising livestock and you must learn from each loss and trust God to get you through it.
I can’t think of many things that compare to raising animals and I strongly encourage parents to let their kids do it! Let them get the animal, be responsible for its daily care, show it, breed it, whatever they want to try! You don’t have to fund it all either-when they are financially invested things are different. Just give them the opportunity to try and help them make decisions when they need you. The demand and work load will sort out the dedicated ones and help kids discover what they are passionate about. What a gift for your kids!
